The Canter is Mitsubishi’s best-selling light-duty commercial vehicle, and its impressive engines are the biggest reason why.
Yes, the Canter has a seriously impressive payload capacity and a fantastic maximum load length and width for bulky cargo, but Mitsubishi engines, particularly the 4P10-HAT6, just outlive and outperform rivals.
For instance, it isn’t unusual for us to take stock of Canter engines with over 200,000, 300,000, or even 400,000 KMS on the clock. That would spell the death of engines from some brands, but not Mitsubishi.
What’s the secret? Over-engineered blocks, cylinders, and easily replaceable and readily available spare parts – an absolute dream for fleet owners. Plus, the Canter’s chassis has the strength to tow up to 3.5T without the engine labouring.
The 4P10-HAT6
Daimler makes the 4P10-HAT6 for Mitsubishi. It is basically a rejigged version of the Fiat F1C (3.0 L) engine but with a slightly different block.
It has a common rail fuel system, high-pressure piezo-injectors, and a Bluetec selective catalytic reduction system for Euro 6 compliance. Its grunt comes from a single turbocharger, which produces a power output between 130 and 175 PS (depending on the version).

The standard AdBlue tank has a capacity of 12 litres, so it needs to be refilled once every 4,000 to 10,000 km.
Here’s a breakdown of the 4P10 engine versions:
- 4P10T2 – 130 PS (96 kW), 300 N⋅m (221 lb-ft)
- 4P10T4 – 150 PS (110 kW), 370 N⋅m (273 lb-ft)
- 4P10T5 – 161 hp (120 kW), 489 N⋅m (361 lb-ft)
- 4P10T6 – 175 PS (129 kW), 430 N⋅m (317 lb-ft)
- 4P10T1+ – 110 PS (81 kW), 430 N⋅m (317 lb-ft)
- 4P10T2+ – 130 PS (96 kW), 430 N⋅m (317 lb-ft)
- 4P10T4+ – 150 PS (110 kW), 430 N⋅m (317 lb-ft)
- 4P10T6+ – 175 PS (129 kW), 430 N⋅m (317 lb-ft)
Fuel consumption is a strong point for all these engines. A 14 MPG average is the norm across 300 miles (or so), but that can stretch to over 20 MPG on the motorway. The tank size is 80-100L, depending on the wheelbase.
