M. W. Truck Parts break and salvage many truck steel and alloy wheel rims every year. The steel and alloy rims we break come from a wide range of vehicles including Volvo, Scania and Mercedes trucks.
Used Truck Tyres & Rims are one of our most popular products, because they are a lot cheaper than new wheels and rims and they are just as robust. However, it’s important consider that when you buy a used truck alloy or wheel that there’s more to look out for than with a new one. So here’s our top tips for buying used steel and alloy wheels for your truck (this is assuming you are buying the wheels to be used as wheels and not to melt them down):
Wheel diameter
The wheel diameter is the measurement across the centre of the wheel and it should always be equal to the tyres diameter.
This is one of the most important pieces of information you need because a 17.5-inch wheel cannot be used with a 17-inch tyre.
Wheel width
The width of the wheel determines how much contact your tyres have with the road. The wider the wheel, the wider the tyre that can be fitted.
It’s always best to refer to your truck manufacturer’s guidelines when choosing the correct wheel width.
Bolt pattern
Bolt patterns on truck wheels can be four, five, six or eight lugs. Generally speaking, a five bolt pattern will fit onto a five wheel hub. However it’s important to ask the seller for advice if you are unsure about this.
It’s also important to consider pattern size because on trucks the patterns can be large and they are not always universal.
Ask for pictures!
Lastly, if you cannot see the rims and are not buying in person, ask for pictures of them. Any reputable breaker will be willing to do this for you.
Ask for the breaker to take close up photos of any damage to the rim or if there isn’t any damage a good photo of the front and back of the wheel as well as the area of the wheel that the tyre will cover.
