Truck engines are commercial workhorses that can quickly rack up 500,000 kilometres and outlive the trucks and companies operating them.
Used engines from Cummins, DAF, and Isuzu find their way into old workhorses and—to a lesser extent—modern but underpowered trucks needing more oomph.
These are some of the most popular truck engines:
DAF engines
DAF’s line of LF and CF truck models has featured a variety of durable and long-lasting engine options over the years, which remain in high demand on the used market.
For lighter applications, the 4.5-litre Cummins ISBe diesel found in the LF45 and LF55 models has proven exceptionally robust and reliable.
The larger LF and CF models like the LF55, CF65, and CF85 often house the 6.7-litre Cummins ISB6.7 engine
Cummins ISX15
Cummins’ ISX15 has been a heavy-duty trucking staple for over 20 years. This 14.9-litre inline-6 diesel is renowned for its adequately maintained fuel efficiency, durability, and million-mile capability.
The ISX15 employs advanced designs, such as compacted graphite iron blocks, ceramic composite heads, and next-generation fuel systems, to enhance performance and longevity.
Volvo D13
Volvo’s D13 engine has cultivated a reputation as a modern diesel workhorse with 12.8 litres of pure pulling power.
Innovative weight-saving designs, high-efficiency injectors, and a robust inline-6 configuration allow the D13 to churn out maximum uptime even after logging 500,000 miles or more in heavy hauling applications.
Mercedes-Benz OM906
With a pedigree dating back over 30 years, the OM906 inline-6 has been a trusted Mercedes truck engine staple in Actros and other models.
This simple yet heavy-duty design can surpass 800,000 miles when meticulously maintained. Easy serviceability is another OM906 advantage.
Paccar MX-13
As the standard diesel option in many DAF trucks, the Paccar MX-13 has rapidly gained a following for its power and efficiency.
This 12.9-litre inline-6 employs compacted graphite iron construction, sophisticated combustion, and air management to produce over 500 hp and a tremendous 1,850 lb-ft of torque while meeting stringent emissions standards.
Navistar DT466
The DT466 from Navistar was a popular medium-duty diesel option in International’s lineup for several decades.
With a relatively simple design utilising a cast-iron block and single rear gear train, the 7.6-litre DT466 has proven to be a reliable and long-lasting engine when properly maintained. Many used examples with 500,000 miles or more are still in service.
MAN D20
German manufacturer MAN is renowned for its stout, well-engineered truck engines built to go the distance.
The D20 inline-6 diesel, found in TGX and other heavy truck models, lives up to that reputation. Advanced common rail fuelling helps the latest versions produce over 300 hp and MAN’s trademark durability.
Hino J08E
Thanks to its reliability and efficiency, Hino’s J08E has been a popular choice for medium-duty box trucks, reefers, and other vocational applications.
This 7.7-litre diesel inline-6 features a dual overhead camshaft design and a compact footprint that provides impressive power density. Hino’s tradition of overengineering helps the J08E log 500,000 miles or more when well-maintained.
