Are used truck axles fit for purpose?

The cost of brand new or even refurbished truck and plant parts can be astronomical. For this reason, you may have considered buying used or second hand parts instead, as they are much cheaper and sometimes easier to obtain. However, it is natural to have concerns over used and second hand parts, especially when it comes to something as critical as drive and steering axles.

What to be aware of with used axles

If drive, mid lift and steering axles have come from a vehicle that has travelled hundreds of thousands of miles, there is bound to be some degradation or deterioration. A lot also depends on the kind of driving the axles sustained and whether they were maintained in a good condition or not.

Another thing you will need to bear in mind is the mass-produced nature of drive and steering axles. This means no two axles are the same and one used part could last a lot longer than another, even if they have been used the same amount and exhibit similar signs of wear and tear.

Proving used axles are fit for purpose

Due to the stresses and strains that drive and steering axles have to deal with, these parts are manufactured to an incredibly high standard and tend to last a lot longer than other vehicle components. Therefore, if a truck or tractor isn’t roadworthy anymore, this doesn’t mean to say its axles are equally useless.

One way of finding out whether drive, mid lift and steering axles are fit for purpose is by checking the service history of the vehicle they came from. This should contain details about major repairs and any problems regarding the axles.
